China Bridge Collapse Claims 12 Lives (Social Media)
International News: At least 12 workers lost their lives after a major portion of an under-construction railway bridge collapsed in northwest China’s Qinghai province in the early hours of Friday. The bridge, which was being built across a significant river, suddenly gave way around 3 a.m., plunging the workers into the water below. According to official reports, 16 people were present at the site, and while the bodies of 12 victims have been recovered, four others remain missing. Authorities fear that the chances of survival for the missing workers are extremely slim.
Chinese media agency Xinhua reported that a large-scale rescue operation was immediately launched. Modern technology, including robots, boats, and helicopters, has been deployed to aid search efforts in the Yellow River. Despite these measures, there has been no sign of survivors so far. Rescue teams are continuing their efforts in extremely difficult conditions due to the river’s depth and strong currents.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was triggered by excessive tension in the bridge’s structure, which caused a steel cable to snap. The sudden break led to the collapse of a large section of the bridge deck, dragging all the workers into the river. Images released by police through Xinhua show a huge gap in the middle of the bridge, with one side hanging precariously over the water. A bent piece of the deck can be seen dangling into the river, confirming the magnitude of the collapse.
The bridge under construction was designed to be 1.6 kilometers (about 1 mile) long, with its deck rising 55 meters (180 feet) above the river’s surface. It was part of China’s ongoing efforts to expand its railway and transportation network, a sector in which the country has gained international recognition. China is known worldwide for its engineering feats and holds records for building the world’s tallest and longest bridges.
This accident has raised serious concerns about construction safety standards in China. Despite being a global leader in infrastructure development, incidents like this highlight the risks faced by laborers and the importance of stricter monitoring of safety measures. Families of the victims are demanding accountability, while authorities have assured that a detailed inquiry will be carried out to identify the cause and responsibility behind the tragedy.
As news of the disaster spread, social media in China was flooded with messages of grief and condolences. Officials have promised compensation for the families of the deceased and missing workers. Meanwhile, the government has called for urgent safety inspections on similar under-construction bridges across the country to prevent further tragedies.
